The coast of South Africa PDF Print E-mail
With more than 3,000 metres of coastline, South Africa boasts no end of opportunity for excitement and adventure. The sightseeing opportunities are boundless, and a trip along the South African coast really can be the trip of a lifetime. Here you will find everything from resort hotels and golf courses to immaculate sandy beaches and tiny fishing villages, with watersports and adventure sports always a possibility for those who like to feel their pulses race.

Many travellers will begin their trip at Cape Town, the fascinating, sexy city that encapsulates all that is exhilarating about urban South Africa. Set aside at least two or three nights here to experience the best of Cape Town, and don`t miss a trip to the legendary Table Mountain, which offers some of the most spectacular views in the country. A cable car ferries tourists to the top, while those who fancy making the ascent on foot can choose from one of several routes - just make sure you are in the company of an experienced guide.

From Cape Town, a pleasant boat trip aboard a ferry or fishing boat takes you to the famous Robben Island – the spot where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner during the Apartheid regime. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with suburb natural beauty, the island is of huge historical interest, and many of the guides showing visitors around the grounds of the prison are in fact former political prisoners.

Much more dramatically and ruggedly beautifully beautiful than its name would suggest, the 600 km Garden Route leads from Cape Town across the coast to Tsitsikamma Forest, past countless small villages and towns, vineyards, farms and fishing villages and welcoming guest houses. Don`t miss the Congo Caves, among the largest cave systems in the world. Also unmissable is the Featherbed Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is reached by ferry across the magnificent Knysna Lagoon. Here you can spot fascinating wildlife such as the tiny Blue Duiker antelope. Nearby, the beautiful beaches of the Plettenberg are some of the most spectacular on the South African coast, and travellers can cool down with a swim in the Indian Ocean. The South African coast isa favourite destination among surfers, but whether you`re looking for adrenaline-packed sports, wildlife-spotting opportunities or just a chance to relax on gorgeous beaches and soak up spectacular views, you`ll find it here.

Although there are many companies offering package tours of the region, the best way for the independent traveller to explore the region is to hire a car – allowing travellers to get off the beaten track and set their own agenda. There are guest houses to be found the length of the coast, all offering a warm welcome to weary travellers. To find the best deals on car hire, visit car hire comparison.
